Beginning on July 1st, California’s Healthy Workplace Healthy Families Act of 2014 (AB 1522) entitles eligible employees to begin accruing one-hour of paid sick leave for every thirty (30) hours worked. Once an eligible employee satisfies a 90-day waiting period, he or she may use up to 24 hours or three days of paid sick leave during each year of employment. Unused sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year but an employer may cap the total accrual at 48 hours or six days. Retaliation or discrimination against an employee who requests or uses paid sick days is prohibited.
